چکیده

This paper presents a realistic characterization of the channel holding time in an operating GSM network covering an urban area. Our approach is entirely statistical: the data set to be fitted has been provided by the OMC (Operations and Maintenance Center). The Kolmogorov Smirnov goodness of fit test is used in order to test the suitability of the exhibited distribution. From this statistical analysis, it can be concluded that the negative exponential distribution is a good approximation for describing the channel holding time. Keywords-Cellular mobile communication, channel holding time, mobility modeling, traffic characterization.

One Directional Real-Time Traffic Flows over the GPRS Air Interface

Packet-switched non real-time data transmissions have increased a lot in the fixed network. Circuit-switched based cellular transmission techno logy Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) is already in the service for more than a decade. A packet based transmission system called General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) is developed for non real-time packet data transmission system by the evo...

Teletraffic analysis and mobility modeling of PCS networks

Channel holding time is of primary importance in teletraffic analysis of PCS networks. This quantity depends on user’s mobility which can be characterized by the cell residence time. In this paper we show that when the cell residence time is not exponentially distributed, the channel holding time is not exponentially distributed either, a fact also confirmed by available field data. In order to...

Multi-Level Access Priority Channel Allocation with Time Threshold in Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) Networks

The focus of this work is on how the congestion experienced on the GSM network can be minimized. The voice calls is broken into sub-classes of services and a level of priority is established among the classes so that the most urgent and important service will have access to the channel by preempting the lower priority services during congestion. The voice communications over the GSM network usi...

A New Mobility Model and Its Application in the Channel Holding Time Characterization in PCS Network

In order to capture the essence of PCS network behavior, a good mobility model is necessary. This model must be good enough to fit field data and make the resulting queueing model still tractable. In this paper, we propose a new mobility model, called hyper-Erlang distribution model, which satisfies the above two requirements. We use this model to characterize the cell residence time and obtain...

Bandwidth Reservation Policy Performance Analysis in a Wireless Cellular Network under Non-exponential Distributions

Past studies in bandwidth reservation strategies in wireless multimedia cellular networks use the exponential distribution for service time and inter-arrival time distributions. But in real world (example like GSM/GPRS), inter-arrival, service time and cell residence time in cellular systems have been shown to be non-exponential. As a result, network performance could be worse than that reporte...
